Why Start a Cleaning Business
There could be many reasons for starting a cleaning business. Maybe you’re looking to make extra cash on the side or you’ve always wanted to start your own business. Starting a cleaning business is probably one of the very few businesses that does not require a lot of capital on start-up. However, despite having a cheap entry barrier, far too many people get into cleaning for the wrong reasons. Can you guess which reason that might be? Here is a hint: $$.
If you’re thinking of starting a cleaning business, please ensure the following:
- You don’t mind getting your hands dirty
- You take pride in cleaning your own home
- Appreciate a sense of a job well done
- You have thick skin
- You are not only chasing the dollar signs
- Refer to numbers 1 & 2
Keep the following in mind:
“If it can get dirty, chances are that someone out there will be willing to pay you to clean it.”
The long and short of it, is that people don’t enjoy cleaning. In fact, I’m convinced that 80% of our society does not enjoy cleaning, yet they do it because they have to. Think about it for a second, who truly enjoys cleaning? We’ve all go better things to do. We’d much rather be doing the things we enjoy, because cleaning is not something that is supposed to be enjoyed. Right?
Actually, the above is sort of right.
This is where you have to determine for your self, in which category do you fall into. Are you the 20% who actually enjoys cleaning and takes pride in a job well done or are you the 80% that cleans only because it has to be done.
If you clean because you have to or fall into the 80% category, than please save your self the headache by not getting into starting a cleaning business. Obviously, you are not passionate about it. Leave it for someone else who is passionate about cleaning.
I started my cleaning business over three years ago. I had no previous enterperneurship experience, but did come with cleaning experience. I cleaned offices, warehouses and schools as young boy alongside my parents. I enjoy having a clean home and always like to keep it clean and tidy. Deep down inside, I’m a bit of a neat-freak. So, I embarked on my own, fully knowing that I did not mind getting my hands dirty. Secondly, I was interested in earning a passive income through a cleaning business.
Do You Have What it Takes?
There are no pre-requesites to start your own cleaning business, other than what we talked about above. You just need to have a passion for cleaning. Much like any other business, you need determination to make the business work. Furthermore, you need the willingness to please the customer and the dedication to provide a proper cleaning job.
Starting a cleaning business is probably one of the simplest businesses to start-up. You don’t need any previous experience or training. However, there will be times when you will need to do niche jobs, such as carpet cleaning or strip & wax the floor which require the use of specialized equipment and taking the proper procedure to ensure that the job is done right. The good part about doing niche jobs is that you can outsource it to another business or simply take on the job and learn on the go.
I did exactly that, when I did my first strip and wax job. I had no clue how to use the buffer or what type of stripper solution to purchase. However, I was eager to learn. And after a few trips to Home Depot and viewing of some YouTube videos, I took on the strip and wax job. I completed the job in two days and the end result was above par. Customer was extremely satisfied with the finished result.
“There will always be new challenges and obstacles along the way, the key to overcoming the obstacles is courage. Never be afraid to take on a new job.”
Envision the Company You to Build!
When I started out, I knew that I wanted to build my cleaning business on relationships, value and trust succeed. Business is all about building relationships, then adding a valuable service in a trustworthy way. Once the trust is gained, everything else falls into place.
Much like being a good friend to someone you care for, business is no different. Listen before you react. Care about your customers problems then go out and solve them.
Remember, starting a cleaning business requires a passion for cleaning. And despite not needing ample amounts of capital, you do need passion to clean. Without a passion for cleaning, your newly started cleaning business is doomed for failure.
Starting your own cleaning service business is a rewarding experience. It provides financial security, personal freedom and many other perks that working for someone else does not offer.
Starting a cleaning service business is not a overnight process. Take one step at a time and never give up.If you have the determination to get up everyday and go to work you can get up everyday and run your own cleaning business.
